Jumper Angst
Finally put the Jumper book to bed the other night, and feel compelled to say something. The book and the film just seem to have the the title in common, oh and the fact the main character can ‘jump’ between areas of the world, that really is it though.
I don’t really want to give away what happens in either to really ruin it for everyone, but those that caught my previous comments on the film know my frustration arose from the glaring plot areas that were left underdeveloped. I turned to the book in the hopes that it would fill in some of these gaps for me, and give me some sense of completion. Oh sweet satisfaction you were not to be found in the few hundred pages that made up Jumper.
The books good, it’s not great but it’s not bad either. It’s pretty much just a meander through a small snap shot of Davys life. In fact it would have made a better film than the one they actually ended up making. I’ve not read through the ‘other’ Jumper book Steven Gould has written to complement the film, so maybe that has the answers I seek. In short the film remains a potentially good science fiction film that is woefully underdeveloped in all the key areas, instead focusing on being able to insert another jump sequence or fight. The book has more substance, but is a little bland though not the worse piece of sci-fi I have ever read.
